Restaurant Escherwyss Zurich
Multifunctional, theatrical hybrid
The basic structure of the former canteen of the Sulzer Escher Wyss company from the 1950s has been preserved almost completely. Doors and windows, floor coverings and wall cladding are still in their original condition. A key requirement for the new owner was the potential to divide the room; however, it was important for Andrin Schweizer to preserve the space as an architectural unit.
He decided on a large, spacious and very theatrical design. Curtains in different colors, widths and lengths form a kind of textile landscape on the ceiling. This creates the impression of a stage house of a theater. Parts of the curtain installation can be lowered to the floor, a design that allows the size of the room to be defined individually and at the push of a button. The room becomes a stage on which various gastronomic uses can be perfectly put in the scene.
