Hotel Löwen Zug
An elegant, fresh look for a traditional hotel
Following a generational change in the family business, the Löwen in Zug sought a contemporary design for its hotel rooms. To achieve this, the hotel launched a design competition inviting experienced professionals in hotel interior design in Switzerland. The aim: to craft a concept that would appeal to a wide range of guests and harmonize with the newly redesigned restaurant, which has recently been operating as a brasserie.
Hotel interior designer Andrin Schweizer and his team undertook a thorough analysis of the hotel’s character and requirements, ultimately developing a bespoke design concept that bridges tradition and modernity. Drawing on the hotel’s long-standing heritage and its unique lakeside location, they envisioned an interior that honors both the building’s history and its surroundings. A highlight of their proposal is the addition of rich blue wall paneling, which elegantly complements the hotel’s classic architecture. This vibrant hue is echoed in the bathroom wall tiles and the living room’s parquet flooring, both arranged in a timeless herringbone pattern.
Hotel design meets local history
In addition to blue, the design concept integrates white, gold, and a range of warm wood tones. These colors subtly reference the region’s tradition of tourism and lake cruises, creating a design language that resonates with the hotel’s lakeside setting. The overall look weaves together a sense of place and a contemporary sense of comfort. The envisioned design serves as an inspiring example of how a hotel’s interior can reflect its regional identity while offering guests an inviting, memorable experience.
For Swiss hoteliers seeking an experienced interior designer, this project shows how a well-crafted design concept can enhance the identity and guest experience of a traditional hotel. By carefully coordinating the new restaurant ambiance with the classic façade, the design approach creates a cohesive atmosphere throughout the hotel. This anchors the storytelling in themes of idyllic tradition and the unique charm of the location — demonstrating how contemporary hotel design can make a hotel’s story tangible.
